These creatures, hybrids of animal lust and unwilling human participation, were humongous in size as well as terrifying to behold. Coming at us from all sides, they quickly had us restrained before we could even fire off a shot. Their loathsome claws bit into my shoulders and arms as I struggled against their superior strength, and I realized at that moment that we were going to die here. Our mission had failed. Tunuhun would be subjected to whatever horrors awaited him down that other passageway that we’d seen him being dragged off toward, and the book, a book which my uncle had entrusted to an utter madman, would be lost forever.

The faces of the monstrosities surrounding us were horridly malformed and repellent to behold. Ridges of cartilage jutted out from thick, sparsely-haired skulls that were conical in nature and vaguely dog-like. The eyes held no intelligence that I could see—just brutal predatory intent. As the creatures holding me grunted in their guttural, snarling anger, I could make out rows of needle-sharp fangs gaping wide to expose a long, blue-and-black tongue. With ropes of saliva drooling out onto me, the beasts which held me fast seemed to be fighting over who would get the first bite of my exposed head. Yet still I struggled on. Even knowing that I was not long for this world, the will to survive was a driving force that could not be quenched. Jerking my body back and forth in their iron-clad grip, I tried desperately to break free of their hold upon me.

“Ladies, please,” came a rich, melodious voice from out of the shadows. “Is that anyway to treat our guests?”

At the sound of this cultured female voice, the things that were holding us captive stopped their salivating attempts to bite into my skull, going so quiet that I could discern clearly the sounds of the pups that were still suckling at the teats of the rotund creature that was lying on the whelping couch. My eyes searched the room around us, shock and horror intermixed within me as I sought out the source of this unexpected voice.

In the back corner of the room, there was an archway that I’d not noticed upon our arrival, most likely because these vile guardians had been standing in front of it at the time. As the creatures surrounding us who were not holding on to any of our limbs parted and then moved around behind us, I was able to clearly see that there was a dark presence standing in this entranceway. Shrouded in shadows, it moved forward into the light of the flickering flames.

Regal is the word that came to mind as I laid eyes on her, yet even that was an unfitting description for someone who was so elegant and also obviously in charge. My mouth hung open in shocked surprise as she glided farther into the room, and I found that I could not tear my eyes from her amazing appearance.

The clothing she wore was simplistic in nature, yet had a certain elegance all its own.
